What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is therapy under hypnosis. Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness that concentrates the mind and allows access to the subconscious part of the mind.

Our state of consciousness is altered many times through out the day e.g., watching television, reading a book, daydreaming. So you actually hypnotise yourself all the time.

Our subconscious mind drives our beliefs, thoughts, and behaviours at the deepest level. We often think that we consciously choose to do things, however more than not a lot of our behaviours and thoughts are driven by our subconscious.

Have you ever driven from point A to B and arrived at B questioning how you got there? That’s because you were on autopilot, driving a car is so deeply ingrained in the mind that the subconscious part of your mind does the driving.

Hypnosis allows us to access this part so that therapy can be done at the deeper level and long-term change can happen.

For example, you want to overcome your smoking habit/addiction at the conscious level but have found it hard to give up. At the same time there is a deeper part of you (subconscious) that believes you’re a smoker or that smoking serves a purpose for you. This deeper belief is what makes it hard for you to stay a non-smoker. Your subconscious mind is more powerful then the conscious mind, that is why will power alone is not enough, the subconscious will win every time. So if you can change these beliefs and thought processes at the subconscious level you can rid the habit for good, kind of like pulling a weed out by the roots.

What does hypnosis feel like?

Hypnosis is like a guided daydream. You are the daydreamer and the hypnotherapist is the guide. All hypnosis is self hypnosis, the therapist’s voice is just the tool to guide you into the relaxed state and do the therapy. Certain muscle relaxation techniques and visualisations are used to relax the body and the mind so that the subconscious can be reached.
